Always keep your cryptocurrency on a hardware wallet or cold storage - Not on exchanges!
As with any type of currency or asset, you would always want to keep it in a safe place. Safe places are safe boxes in your home, banks, vaults, wallet and in the case of digital crypto currencies, a cold storage or a hardware wallet. As we all know online banking is pretty safe, but its not impossible to hack, many banks have been hacked in the past. Cryptocurrency exchanges are no different. They are essentially online system which CAN be hacked. Buying cryptocurrency and keeping it online in an exchange is the same as, buying something from a store and letting them hold it for you. It is possible, that the next day you visit the store, its not there anymore, or taken over by someone else and they refuse to give you your belongings. You wouldn’t trust them, right? Online exchanges are the same, they are online stores for buying crypto. It worth mentioning the example of Mt. Gox. Apparently, 850,000 bitcoins were stolen. They filed a bankruptcy and people lost their money forever. Who knows, it could be an inside job (it’s my personal opinion, please don’t sue me!). Countless other exchanges have been hacked in the past. Case in point, right after buying cryptocurrency, store it in a safe wallet. Safe wallets are paper wallets or hardware wallets aka cold storage.
Paper wallets
Paper wallets are wallets which you can create online and then transfer your cyrpto onto them They are called paper wallets, because they can be printed and stored on paper. When you create a paper wallet, you are given a private key or password for the wallet, which should be kept safe in order to use the wallet. You can read more about them here.
Hardware wallets
While paper wallets safe, they are not exactly user friendly. Going through the hassle of creating a wallet and storing them all safely offline is no easy job. The hardware wallets, solve that problem. Hardware wallets are basically a usb stick with strong encryption which stores your private key or passcode for a variety of cryptocurrency wallets. The private key never leaves the wallet and you always have to authorize payments on the wallet before executing them. They are secure, portable and easy to use. There are plenty of options available, two of the most popular ones are Ledger and Trezor. My favorite is a Ledger Nano S. It has plenty of support for various cryptocurrencies. It comes with a strong encryption. It’s pretty much uncrackable(to my knowledge, till this day). It has a very good support available online and an open source community which adds new coins features. If there is a security vulnerability found, it is immediately fixed. It is always worth it to spend $100 or 100€ than to lose $500. I also own one and you can buy yourself a Ledger Nano S here:
